Giebink, G. Scott - M.D. Age 59 Died suddenly on Aug. 29 of heart failure doing what he loved best, sailing. It is ironic that his heart failed because it was so full. He loved so much in his all too brief life. First and foremost, he loved his family: wife, Susan Casey, his convivante and life mate; children, Peter (Monica Valbuena), Brent (Jennifer Martone), Kathryn (John Helnen), all of Mpls; mother, Barbara 'Scottie' Giebink; and stepfather, Roger Wheelwright of Bozeman, MT; sister, Nancy of Port Townsend, WA; brothers, Thomas of Austin, TX, David (Claudia), Great Falls, VA, John (Barbara) of Burlington, VT; and especially his grandchildren, Pablo Manu, Dag, Hendrik and the newest grandbaby due this month. Scott was passionate about children. Not only his grandchildren but all children, everywhere. This passion fueled a long and successful career at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he did his training. After completing residency at Denver Children's Hospital and a stint with the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps in Alaska, Scott returned to the University of Minnesota for fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases. An internationally recognized researcher, Scott remained at the University where he served as head of the Division of Pediatric Diseases and interim head of the Dept. of Pediatrics. His passion transcended academia and the laboratory. Scott was an ardent champion for legislation to improve the health and well-being of Minnesota's children. He was honored by the Children's Defense Fund for his advocacy leading to enactment of MinnesotaCare. In addition, Scott was a founding member of the University Pediatric Foundation, which supports research to identify and cure children's diseases. Scott passed into eternity as the sun was setting on his beloved lake, Lac Courte Oreilles, in WI. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy endures in the hearts of all he touched.
