Our Story
Discover the rich heritage of Washburn-McReavy & Cemeteries. Since 1857, our family has been dedicated to serving the Minneapolis/St. Paul community with compassion and respect.
Beginnings in 1857
Founded by William P. Washburn in 1857, originally as a furniture store that also offered undertaking services. This business transformation occurred just before Minnesota became a state.
Furniture to Funerals
Transitioning from furniture sales, Washburn Undertakers became a dedicated funeral service provider, eventually renaming to Washburn Mortuary to reflect this change.
A New Era in 1931
To honor his nephew, Donald R. McReavy, the business was renamed Washburn-McReavy in 1931, marking the beginning of a lasting family legacy.
Generational Leadership
Despite the sudden death of Donald R. McReavy in 1949, the business thrived under the leadership of his wife Lillian and son William L., who continued the family's vision and expanded the business across the Twin Cities.
Innovations in Service
In the 1960s, under William L., Washburn-McReavy was the first in Minnesota to use white hearses and coaches, a distinctive company trademark today.
Expansion and Growth
The company grew significantly in the 1980s, acquiring several competitors and expanding their number of chapels, establishing a presence that spanned across the Twin Cities.
Cemetery Expansion
Starting with the acquisition of Hillside Cemetery in 2001, Washburn-McReavy expanded into the cemetery business, providing integrated services that include memorial gardens and advanced facilities.
Milestones at Glen Haven
The opening of Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in 2007 featured a state-of-the-art chapel and the largest privately owned Veterans monument in Minnesota, demonstrating ongoing commitment to community and innovation.
The Legacy Continues
With deep roots in civic organizations and local charities, Washburn-McReavy continues to embody the philosophy of "Our Family Serving Your Family."
